Forum update / conversion

Postby KiTA » Mon Nov 26, 2012 2:38 am

I am probably going to be doing a forum update Monday, November 26th -- basically the second I wake up in a few hours. At the very least, we'll be moving from phpBB 2.0.23 (2001) to phpBB 3.0.11 (2012). This will give us a little bit more ability to kick the shit out of these idiots spamming from Australia.

These are the instructions I will be following:
https://www.phpbb.com/support/documents ... =3#convert

And if things go really, absolutely wrong, most everyone has my contact information.

It's likely we'll lose mxBB in the conversion, which is fine, as we don't use it anyway.

I have been considering replacing mxBB (the front page) with a Wordpress themed blog. This is how Sahadou and the other "professional" manga scanlation teams do it. I am not sure if I could link up Wordpress and phpBB usernames, though... hm...

This plugin suggests it's possible: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/php ... e-sign-on/

But this may be a better option:
http://wpmu.org/how-to-migrate-a-phpbb- ... d-bbpress/

Basically Wordpress has it's own forum which integrates directly into Wordpress. This would probably be a better option all told.

Thoughts?

Looking at the conversion process, I'm going to basically have to reinstall phpBB from scratch to move it to version 3 -- but the conversion should keep all our data.

At the same time, moving from phpBB to bbPress requires version 3. So... Yeah.

Good idea.

I don't think it's necessary to link accounts between WP and forum. If it's just for releases, you can just give permissions to those who will be posting updates.

Very first post here: http://wordpress.org/support/view/plugi ... ws/bbpress implies that bbPress have some moderation issues. I think if it's true it would be best to keep forum and front page separate.
